A fully licensed builder holds an unrestricted Builder’s Licence issued by NSW Fair Trading. To qualify, the individual must complete:
- At least 2 years’ full-time, paid building industry experience
- A Certificate IV in Building and Construction
- Plus one of: Diploma of Building and Construction, a relevant Bachelor’s degree, or a current carpentry or bricklaying contractor licence
A licensed builder can undertake any residential building work, including structural changes, additions, and modifications to load-bearing parts of the home.
A Kitchen, Bathroom and Laundry Renovator licence is conditional. It’s issued to tradespeople with a Certificate III in carpentry, joinery, plumbing, or wall and floor tiling. They are legally restricted to surface-level renovation work and cannot undertake any work involving structural or load-bearing parts of your home.
If your renovation involves moving walls, creating new doorways, repairing structural damage, or extending the room, you legally need a licensed builder.
